The Rugby Round Up

This weekend saw a smaller number of fixtures, with the highlight being the top of the table clash between Loughrea and Corinthians Blue in u18.5s. Another good crowd turned out to support the lads.

Loughrea U18.5 Boys Dominate Corinthians in Top-of-the-Table Clash

The Loughrea U18.5 boys delivered a commanding performance under the lights at Ballygasty on Saturday night, securing a 38-14 victory over Corinthians Blue in a thrilling top-of-the-table encounter. Both teams entered the match undefeated, setting the stage for a fierce battle.

The opening 20 minutes were a defensive showcase, with neither side giving an inch. That changed when Luke Marjanovic broke through the Corinthians’ defense, shrugging off multiple tackles to score Loughrea’s first try. Just five minutes later, Marjanovic struck again, powering through defenders to notch his second try of the night. Jack Quinn added the extras, giving Loughrea a 12-0 lead at halftime.

The second half saw Loughrea steadily take control. Vice-captain Jack Colohan extended the lead with a well-earned try in the 50th minute, which Quinn converted with precision.

Corinthians, backed by vocal travelling supporters, responded with a skillfully executed try and conversion to keep their hopes alive. But Loughrea’s dominance in set pieces and creative attacking play proved too much. A quick tap penalty and slick passing saw fullback Donal Nugent dive over for another try, followed by a sensational score from a kick chase, with Kevin Quinn landing a difficult touchline conversion.

Corinthians added a second converted try late on, but Loughrea had the final say. Paddy Malone finished the night in style, crashing over in the corner after another effective kick chase.

The final whistle saw Loughrea celebrate a well-deserved 38-14 win, cementing their position at the top of the league table and setting a high standard for the season ahead.

Loughrea U16 Girls Shine in Castlebar Clash

The Loughrea U16 girls delivered a stellar performance on Saturday as they traveled to Castlebar for their rescheduled league fixture. The East Galway side wasted no time asserting themselves, with Rhea Sestak crossing the line for a try within the opening five minutes.

Castlebar, however, responded with determination, piling on the pressure for a relentless five-minute spell. Their persistence paid off as they broke through Loughrea’s resilient defence to score a well-earned try of their own.

Loughrea captain Amy Moran then stepped up, scoring and converting her own try, only for Castlebar to hit back swiftly, leaving the scoreline at a tight 12-10 in favor of Loughrea. But Loughrea found their groove and took control, with Sestak, Ally Cannon, and Addyson D’Arcy each adding tries before halftime, giving the visitors a commanding 27-10 lead.

The second half saw Loughrea shift into another gear. Sestak and Cannon both completed their hat-tricks, showcasing their powerful runs and dazzling footwork. Castlebar refused to go down quietly, mounting significant pressure, but the Loughrea defense stood firm.

Amy Moran and Niam Brady added to the tally in the second half, with Moran converting three tries to round off an emphatic victory for Loughrea.

The team now looks ahead to their final league showdown against Dunmore next weekend in Loughrea, brimming with confidence after this dominant display.

Loughrea U14 Girls Battle Hard in Derby Defeat to Ballinasloe

The Loughrea U14 girls made the short trip to Ballinasloe on Sunday for a highly anticipated Division 1 clash against their local rivals. In a closely fought first half, both sides displayed tremendous effort, each crossing the line for a try. However, Loughrea edged ahead with a successful conversion to take a slender lead into halftime.

Loughrea’s defensive resilience was on full display throughout the opening half, as they contained Ballinasloe’s attacking threats and held firm in open play. Despite strong individual and team performances, Loughrea were unable to break free in attack and extend their advantage.

The second half, however, saw Ballinasloe find their rhythm. Utilizing their well-drilled set pieces, they exploited gaps in the Loughrea defense both out wide and through the middle, running in three additional tries.

Despite their best efforts, Loughrea were unable to claw their way back, with the game ending 26-7 in favor of Ballinasloe. It was a spirited display from the Loughrea girls, who will no doubt take valuable lessons from this derby clash as they look ahead to their next fixture.
