Loughrea 1st XV versus OLBC 1st XV
Loughrea RFC Senior team play in their first Curley Cup home game of the season this weekend . Loughrea have played 1 game so far, which was on the 31st August and away to Sligo 2nds. Loughrea went down 24-12, but the game was closely contested! Since then, the seniors have played in 2 “friendlies” winning 1 and losing the other.
This is also the first home game for senior team coach Tony Dolan, who joined Loughrea RFC from Buccaneers in the off-season.
The opponents this week are Galway City club Our Ladies Boys Club RFC (OLBC) who have also played 1 game so far in the cup, also against Sligo 2nds. OBLC lost to Sligo, losing 22 -7.
Loughrea and OLBC recently played in the 22/23 season, with Loughrea travelling to OLBC and winning 26-0.
In last year’s Curley Cup, Loughrea progressed to the Cup semi-final before losing to Corinthians 2nds 29-13.
If Loughrea win this fixture this weekend, then they will move into the plate semi-final against the runners up in Pool B – one of Ballina, Tuam 2nds or Ballinasloe. That plate competition semi-final will take place on the weekend of the 22nd September and should be an away game if Loughrea progress.
Kick-off is at 19:30 on Saturday 14th September at Loughrea Rugby Club Ballygasty. Come on down and support the Loughrea team – tea + coffee will be available from the clubhouse and a bag of crisps for the little ones!
The team will be announced and published on Friday 13th September.

Great game of rugby and great buzz down at the Rugby Club – lovely to meet Paula and Josh from An Garda Siochana – click here for the FB Post – the presidents team played some dazzling rugby, with some incredible skills on show from a very small number of their players. The South Africans appeared to lack physical fitness, but there were glimmers of skills on show – great potential! Thanks to Bertus helping with the braai and all the family, friends and supporters of both teams who cam down to the club to enjoy the day and the match.
This Saturday 13th July, as part of the buildup for the 2nd test match between South Africa and Ireland, an invitational South African ex-pats team from Loughrea and surrounds will be playing a Loughrea Presidents team at in tag rugby!
